thank you so much for the review of the dyson. i love my dyson vacuum (i also have the dc17). even after vacuuming with my old vacuum, i can take my dyson over the same area and pick up a good bit of extra dirt and dog hair that did not even seem to be visible.
Do not buy Dyson products!!! We bought a DC 17 vacuum and it completely destroyed my brand new carpeting. It ripped up a layer of carpet fiber. I now have a layer of fuzz on the top of my carpeting. The fuzz-layer attracts dirt and pet hair like velcro. The carpet is ruined and never looks clean. The damage occurred after vacuuming only a few times. Dyson won't even let me return the vacuum. Their customer service is terrible. They are sarcastic and rude on the phone. Do not waste your money or risk thousands of dollars of damage to your home!!!

replay to bill's comments, I was surprised to read your comments. When you have a new carpet fitted you shouldn't vacuum it for at least 4 weeks,if you do it can damage the carpet fibres.
I agree, DO NOT buy a Dyson. Our carpet is only 2 years old and was in excellent condition until a Dyson was used on it. The first time it was used it ripped out a small section of carpet. Thinking it was a fluke thing I used it a second time only to have it rip out a large section of carpet. I called Dyson and after sending them pictures, receipts and the vacuum itself back to them they aren't willing to do anything. Now we are left with replacing our new carpet again. I have read several message boards regarding this same issue. Several carpet companies will void their warranty if you use a Dyson on it. Save your self the trouble and money buy something else.
I have a wool area rug that my dyson has ruined. The first time I vacuumed it, I noticed it looked it little "shaggier". I called the company I got the rug from and they said extra fibers would come up/out the first few times I vac it. Well, these are not loose fibers, they are still attached to the backing of the rug, just unlooped now, thanks to my dyson. I was told by a local flooring company dyson's work great for wood floors ONLY. Otherwise they will ruin your area rugs AND carpet. Beater bar on or off. My husband is PISSED, all that money spent on a dyson and we could've just gotten a normal vac that's been around for many more decades than dyson, saved money, and saved my rugs.
Same problem here. Didn't want to believe it, we had beautiful carpet until we bought a dyson. Carpet is expensive to replace. I'm really pissed
